Lafayette County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. It is the second least populated county in Florida. Its county seat is May. It is a prohibition or entirely dry county. This County was created in 1856 and was named for the Marquis de Lafayette, who served with G. Washington in the American Revolutionary War. Lafayette County has a total area of approximately 548 square miles of which 99% is land and 1% water. As of the 2000 census, there were 7,022 people, 2,142 households, and 1,591 families residing in Lafayette County, FL.
